The Design team includes Product Designers and UX Researchers, who work across the end to end experience for both clients and creators. Each designer is embedded within a ‘Group’ who focus on key parts of the user journey: Exploration, Connection, Collaboration and Platform.

What is the role?

As a Research Ops Assistant, you will work in close collaboration with the UX Research team, located within the broader Design team. This role involves activities such as research participant screening and recruitment, observing usability studies and foundational research projects under the guidance of the research area leads. You will have the opportunity to engage in research, from planning to insights delivery.


As part of the role, you will be involved in research with end-users and internal stakeholders, working alongside experienced researchers, designers, product managers, and engineers. This role will require familiarity with best practices for common research methods including: interviewing, usability testing, heuristic evaluations, surveys, task analysis and the like. 


Key Responsibility areas:

User Experience and Research

  • Be responsible for helping the research team in building a deep understanding of the people who use our product and their behaviours, attitudes and motivations, challenges and pain points. 
  • Be responsible for participant outreach, recruiting, screening, scheduling, and tracking of research participants
  • Assist the research team in preparing user research activities, including: developing research plans, discussion guides, questionnaires, planning unmoderated tests etc.
  • Monitoring quality standards of practice through the research project; i.e. maintaining their research depository, participant databases etc.
  • Assisting the team in creating reports (interview showcase, highlight compilations, slide decks etc.).
  • Participating in research related activities as needed, including: Observing usability testing, participating in user interviews, attending project kick-offs, planning etc…
  • Act as an advisor for roadmap items, bringing both qualitative and quantitative data to the conversation to support your recommendations.
  • Acting as a resource person for other team members; i.e. being familiar with where research data is stored and pointing people in the right direction.

  • Actively seek to remain informed of what’s happening across the Product Management and Design group, and wider business context.

Communication

  • Possess strong verbal and written communication skills, whether in one-on-one or group situations.
  • Ability to communicate via phone, email, video conferencing, and online chat tools (such as Slack).

Culture

  • Contribute to the culture of the Design team by identifying and helping to organise opportunities (internal or external speaking engagements, local meetups, discussions, etc.) to spread design thinking and enthusiasm throughout 99designs and the wider design and research community.


Required Education, Experience, and Skills:

  • Excellent practical understanding of research methodologies and have strong documentation, communication and presentation skills with an ability to effectively input into design critiques.
  • Interest in general research and user research methods.
  • Passionate about user-centred design and accessibility.
  • Detail-oriented and ability to work fairly independently on a variety of tasks.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Can prioritize time between multiple projects, and be flexible by adapting to changing schedules and different projects.
  • Excellent organisational, data collection and reporting skills.
  • Ability to articulate clear and actionable insights and recommendations, and in multiple ways (such as journey maps, showcases, presentations etc)
  • Flexibility in adapting your approach to meet the needs and standards of the organisation.
  • Great communicator that loves organising, documenting and sharing knowledge
  • Exceptional intellectual curiosity, a passion for problem-solving and comfortable working with ambiguity
  • Good understanding of Design Thinking methodology, and how to utilise these tools
  • A relevant degree in Human Factors, Psychology, Human Computer Interaction, User Experience, or a similar field is desirable.

Career development & learning

Career development is huge at 99designs - we are known for promoting from within. There are both formal and informal leadership development opportunities and programs, depending on your passion for either design or people leadership. 


There are also a variety of learning and development programs to create lots of space for people to learn in a way that works for them. This includes R&D days - currently one paid day a fortnight, where every single employee can take the day to do a course, do some research and reading, or work on a feature idea which hasn’t had the air time just yet... basically do anything to help them learn + contribute to the business better. 


99mentors is another company-wide initiative for people who would like to receive mentoring, and those who would like to mentor others, to be paired up (by the ‘People Ops’ team) and for a 6-month mentorship to take place. 99designs is about to re-boot 99mentors, and are also looking at the opportunity to bring in some external mentors as well where there might be knowledge gaps or other opportunities.

Tack on an annual conference and continued learning budget of around $2,000 and you will find that you have ample opportunity to develop and grow into the designer you are destined to be!


99designs have a culture of workplace flexibility

Some people work remotely, some people have start and flex finish times, we have part-time workers (4 day weeks, 9 day fortnights)... the common thread between it all is that it’s unique to each person's needs. Some people have joined with flex needs in their contract, and others have changed as their life and circumstances have!
